Bene Bös: 403k FAI triangle

Bene Bös broke another personal best on Saturday 12th March, when he flew a huge 403km FAI triangle on his Luna 2 23 over the flatlands of Germany. It was 50km further than his 2021 PB, but he landed with some fuel left in the tank so it wasn't the limit.
The flight was what you could call a 'lucky plan B'. The soaring cost of diesel put paid to a planned trip to Fermo in Italy to fly with fellow BGD Team Pilot Navid Saleki. This was a 'staying local' plan. "I checked the weather and noticed that Saturday seems to be quite okay for an XC flight. On Friday evening I made my preparations and planned my route according to the Windy forecast".
Bene slept in his van at the airfield, and was up before sunrise. He launched around 7am. He then flew for 7 hours and 22 minutes at a max. altitude of 1,300m, well wrapped up against the cold and with heated gloves. "When the thermals get too strong I need to keep my hands up for several hours to stabilise my glider. In these situations I’m really happy to fly an intermediate wing. I notice that some people try to promote that you need high end comp wings to fly successful XC, but that’s the wrong way in my opinion. People need to fly wings where they feel comfortable and where they can safely handle thermals and turbulence.
"The Luna 2 offers a very high passive safety and I didn’t face any collapses, but to fly an efficient XC you need to stay on your perfect line and so I had to constantly work keeping my direction".
Bene's Luna 2 23 was powered by a FlyProducts Eclipse with Vittorazi Moster EFI engine. He had an 18l main tank, and a second fuel tank mounted in front of him.
